The Transfer of Ashes

Many people choose to have their loved one’s ashes placed in an urn or scatter tube, to keep them safe until a decision is made about whether to inter them, or scatter them at a place of special meaning.

There are a wide variety of urns available, from classic china or ceramic urns, engraved wooden caskets, to seagrass or willow urn baskets for a more natural look.

If you like the idea of scattering your loved one’s ashes on water, you can also buy fully biodegradable floating ‘pillows’ which will carry their ashes out in the tide before slowly breaking down (they also come with instructions on how to do this safely). You can buy urns which are also planters, and can be buried in a garden with a tree or rose planted above as a marker of remembrance.

Scatter tubes offer an eco-friendly and convenient way for families to scatter ashes when the time is right. They are also convenient if ashes are to be split and scattered in different places, or to be looked after by different family members. They are also an option should you wish for ashes to be interred alongside a natural eco burial. Scatter tubes come in a wide range of prints and colours.

It is usual for ashes to be returned from a crematorium in a cardboard box with plastic inner, which is why many people choose to have their ashes transferred to a more permanent vessel.
